How to Work with Candles

CANDLES FOR WORK, WORSHIP, AND ENJOYMENT
Candles can be used to accomplish a particular task, aid in worship, or just lend their beauty to the surroundings. Whatever the job, there’s a candle that is up to the task.
| CANDLE TYPE | USAGE |
| VIGIL | Colored, glass-encased candles used for rituals, novenas, or as vigil candles on an altar. They have no images, writing, or designs on the glass. |
| SAINT/NOVENA | Glass-encased vigil candles used to call on or draw the powers of a particular saint. The glass casing will either have a printed picture of the saint glued to it or will have a screen print of the saint on it. |
| HOODOO/WORK | Glass-encased vigil candles with printed or silk-screened pictures. Comparable to condition powders in that they are directed at achieving a particular outcome. The glass casing will be screen printed with images and labels that refer to what kind of working they are for, for example: Jinx Removing, Fast Luck, Break Up, D.U.M.E., Steady Work, etc. |
| FIGURAL/IMAGE | Molded candles used to symbolize people, ideas, or concepts in workings. The male and female versions are often used as poppets. Skull candles are used to work on a target’s mind. Penis and vulva candles are used to work on a target’s sexuality. Black Cat candles are used for gambling luck. Cross candles are used for spiritual blessings, money, marriage, among other things, depending on the style and color. There is quite a list. |
| ORISHA | Glass-encased vigil candles used to call on and draw the powers of a particular orisha. The glass casing will have a screen print of the orisha’s veve or symbol. The color of the candle will be one that is favored by that orisha. |
| KNOB | Molded and segmented candles that look like balls stacked on top of each other. They are particularly used for spells that last over period of days; each day a new segment is burned. They negate the need to divide a candle with pins. |
| MILAGROS/EX-VOTOS | Segmented candles that are burned to reveal a different charm(milagro) each day. |
| ROLLED BEESWAX | Rolled candles made from the wax of bees. They have a honeycomb pattern and are made by rolling the sheets of wax around a wick. They are especially easy to unroll and load with herbs and powders. |
| 7-WISHES | Glass-encased vigil candles with seven layers of wax in different colors. A layer is burned each day accompanied by appropriate prayers or petitions/wishes. |
| RED & BLACK/ Red Over Black (Double Action) |
Jumbo stick or glass-encased vigils used to remove a love-jinxing spell or removes obstacles or energy blocks in attracting love, creativity, sex, strength and energy. Burn at both ends or upside down. |
| BLACK & RED/ Black Over Red (Reversible Double Action) |
Jumbo stick or glass-encased vigils used to repel negative intentions from enemies and returns that energy to the sender. |
| WHITE & BLACK/ White Over Black (Double Action) |
Jumbo stick or glass-encased vigils used to return evil to its sender or break curses and draw blessings. Burn at both ends or upside down. |
| GREEN & BLACK/ Green Over Black (Double Action) | Jumbo stick or glass-encased vigils used to remove a money-jinxing spells and draw money. Burn at both ends or upside down. |
| RED, WHITE & GREEN (Triple Action) | Jumbo stick or glass-encased vigils used to draw love, spiritual blessings and good luck. May also be used when working with spirits who have strong ties to, or are by nationality or ancestry, Mexican. |
| BLUE, WHITE & RED (Triple Action) | Jumbo stick or glass-encased vigils used to draw a peaceful home life, spiritual blessings and love. May also be used when working with Black Hawk. |
Dressing and Fixing a Vigil Candle
The process of preparing a candle to burn for a magical purpose is a personal thing. Everyone has his or her own technique. I offer here a quick list of steps to get you started.
- Clean the candle with alcohol, lemon juice, or Florida Water. (Not necessary if the candle is meant to take something off of you.)
- Trim the wick, and if necessary, re-position it.
- Inscribe the name/s and birth date/s of the person/s who need the work.
- Poke four or more holes in the top. (Steps 4 & 5 are not necessary if the candle is meant to take something off of you. Wiping yourself down with the candle will be enough.)
- Load the candle with herbs, roots, minerals, and symbolic items.
- Write out your petition and place it under the candle just before you light it.
- Pray your petition into the candle.
- Dress the candle with oil.
- Light the candle.
- Repeat your petition/pray over the candle, daily.
- Interpret the burn.
- Repeat the burn as necessary.
